As much as I respected Steve Jobs, I respected Dennis Ritchie more. I learned, today, that he had passed away after reading tis article on CNN: http://www.cnn.com/2011/10/14/tech/innovation/dennis-ritchie-obit-bell-labs/index.html?hpt=hp_bn6.
I remember getting my copy of the The C Programming Language, 2nd Edition, by Brian Kernighan and Dennis Ritchie, and how excited I was to begin learning to program in C. The basic syntax and structure have withstood the test of time, being incorporated into C++, C#, Java, Javascript, and many other languages.
Yes, Steve Jobs had a great impact on the technology that many of us use in our daily lives. But, Ritchie provided the foundation for practically every bit of software written in the past 25 years.
Regardless, I hope they both rest in peace.
